Yesterday my Dad and I were visited by our relatives from New Jersey. My cousin and her fiancé and her son came with lunch from a Chinese takeaway. Our reunion was good. My cousin’s fiancé is a retired piano salesman and he persuaded my Dad to play the piano in our facility.
My Dad is an accomplished musician. He plays piano by ear. Despite the pain my Dad walked slowly to the activities hall and sat at the piano. He said he was a bit rusty but he played well enough. There was an audience which appreciated his music. My cousin and I were so happy. We hadn’t seen each other for years.
By the time my Dad was finished playing he was tired. We took him back to our room in a wheelchair. But we had a good time.
My family needed to be with each other. Their visit was a tonic for me. Sometimes living in a nursing home can be lonely but now I feel much closer to my relatives.
