How to Eat

There are books, believe it or not, that has this title. Here at Heritage I am learning how to eat successfully. I have a speech therapist who guides me as I go through days of eating meals. But her days with me have ended. So I’m on a solo flight eating meals.

The key to eating is to be mindful of what you are consuming. Chewing thoroughly and letting saliva suspend your food in your mouth before preparing the bolus of food to be swallowed. A successful swallow is when you have managed to push the bolus into your esophagus. A sip of water, or other beverage should follow push the bolus of food down your gullet.

I’m glad that I consumed my food this morning. Before yesterday I felt nervous contemplating eating my meals. But I realized that I had time to eat mindfully. I ate with a calm disposition yesterday. And I’m glad I overcame my nervous feelings.
