Two Cousins

I have many cousins, but one of them who’s older than me is in hospital. She bent over and collapsed while at church going through the donations for their accountant. Her name is Sandra and she’s now in a prestigious hospital. She went through a ventilator and is now breathing on her own. She’s semi-conscious, mostly sleeping, not speaking (yet) and is miserable I think.

I have been in the hospital this year – in fact, I spent the new year in the hospital and was released after returning to the hospital because I fell twice and bumped my head. My disposition in the hospital has been positive. I lost consciousness at first but I regained sanity soon after I was admitted to the ICU. I had to go through rehabilitation. My nurses were my buddies. My doctor was a good man. He thinks I ought to be more sociable. I don’t have many friends. I have one friend whom I consider my best friend and she’s all the way out in Maryland. We hardly talk or email. But, whoa, she was also hospitalized. She had pneumonia. What is this round robin of friends and relatives visiting the hospital? I think we’re all at the age where our bodies break down and the rest of our lives, we’ll be seeing doctors and specialists.

I thank God Sandra is alive. I want her to survive and make friends with the nurses at Sinai. I want her to be able to walk without much accessories. Perhaps a walking stick but no more. She’s going to be there for a longer amount of time than I spent in my hospital. My best friend was in the hospital for 10 days. I prayed all the time in the hospital that I will be released soon. But they had a different outlook on whether I was healing and if I had a safe home.

My prayer for us middle aged to elderly women is that we have somebody to watch over us, and that God will give us the grace to survive to a ripe old age.
